Compensation $40,000 – 45,000 annual salary +benefits

Discovery Academy is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) Independent school offering personalized educational experiences to preschool-12th grade students. The Middle and High School partner with the University of Nebraska High School to offer both in class and on-line learning opportunities.

Position Description:

The Middle/High School Science Teacher is an essential member of the Discovery Academy team and works directly with the Upper School Director and other teaching staff.  All members of the teaching staff are responsible to plan and implement a personalized learning experience for all students.  Discovery Academy staff also serve as student mentors to develop the individual needs, interests and abilities of students as they begin to prepare for life after high school. Other duties that may be assigned by the Upper School Director or Head of School will include field trip planning, outdoor learning experiences and curriculum development.


We are seeking a highly motivated and creative educator who has a strong background in project-based learning, assessing and implementing an online curriculum and are interested in developing individualized lessons that include the outdoor environment of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and the local community of Big Sky.  Strong interest in creating a classroom culture of academic excellence, student engagement, growth mindset, and an individualized mastery-based classroom and school community.  The ideal candidate will have experience in teaching a multi-age classroom setting, developing curriculum, utilizing multi-faceted resources aligned to common core or state standards.  

The candidate must have a willingness to collaborate with colleagues and communicate effectively in writing, through newsletters, and face-to-face with all members of the school community including families, students, and staff.  Additionally, the candidate must demonstrate a willing flexibility to adapt to new ideas and shared lesson planning.   Experience in Nordic or alpine skiing and/or outdoor education preferred.

Position requires a demonstrated ability to:

  • Monitor student progress using fall, winter, and spring assessment tools and adjusting instruction accordingly for each student.
  • Effectively communicate with families in a proactive, positive, and professional manner
  • Facilitate student learning across grade levels in a multi-age classroom
  • Work cooperatively and collaboratively with staff
  • Embrace an enquiry and project-based learning perspective
  • Develop and implement curriculum
  • Take the lead in classroom culture development
  • Create a classroom culture that allows students to feel empowered to grow and learn
